The case

Do you need a VPN in China?

China is the country in the world where the case for a VPN is strongest and most fraught. The Great Firewall blocks Google, Facebook, Twitter/X, YouTube, WhatsApp, most Western news, and thousands of other services. A VPN is essentially the only way to use the open internet from inside China. The complication: only 'state-licensed' VPNs are technically legal for individual use; consumer VPNs operate in a legal grey area. In practice, foreigners and travellers use them routinely with very little personal risk, but providers are blocked at the protocol level frequently. Pick a VPN with strong obfuscation (NordVPN's Stealth servers, ExpressVPN's Lightway with obfuscation) and install it BEFORE travelling — most VPN websites are blocked from inside China.

Local services

Local streaming services

  • iQiyi
  • Youku
  • Tencent Video
  • Bilibili
  • Mango TV

These services typically geo-block users outside China. Most major VPNs (NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark) maintain IPs that keep them accessible when you travel. Mullvad and free VPNs are not optimized for streaming and won’t reliably work.

Frequently asked

Frequently asked questions

Are VPNs legal in China?

Only 'state-licensed' VPNs are explicitly legal. Consumer VPNs (NordVPN, ExpressVPN, etc.) operate in a legal grey area. Individual use by travellers is rarely prosecuted, but commercial unlicensed use can be. The real practical issue is that most VPN websites and protocols are blocked from inside China.

Which VPN actually works in China right now?

ExpressVPN's Lightway protocol with obfuscation and NordVPN's obfuscated servers have been the most reliable through periods of intensified blocking. Status changes month to month. Install BEFORE travelling — VPN provider websites are typically blocked from inside the country.

Can I access Google and Twitter from China with a VPN?

Yes — that's the primary use case. With a working VPN, the Great Firewall is bypassed and the open internet is accessible.
