Public WiFi is mostly fine in 2026 — HTTPS encrypts almost everything end-to-end, and the dramatic 'someone steals your Facebook on hotel WiFi' attacks of 2010 don't really work anymore. What still bites: evil-twin access points pretending to be the network you expect, DNS leakage to the hostile network, and any app that still doesn't use TLS. A VPN closes the residual gap.

Context

The actual threats

Evil-twin: an attacker sets up an SSID called 'Hilton-Guest' next to the real network. Your phone joins the strongest signal. Anything outside TLS is theirs. DNS sniffing: even with HTTPS, your DNS lookups reveal which sites you visit. Captive portals can serve fake login pages that capture credentials before HTTPS kicks in. A VPN with auto-connect plus kill switch makes all three of these moot.
